What Does Turnitin Clarity Track? What Your Writing Report Shows

by

Turnitin Clarity is a writing space where students draft assignments inside Turnitin, and it records how the work was built, not just the finished paper. When the student submits, the instructor can see a Writing Report with details such as revision history, pasted versus typed text, and a playback of the document’s development. Turnitin describes this record as the student’s “proof of process.” If a professor raises questions based on a Clarity Writing Report, the report is a record of activity, and what that activity means is decided through the school’s own process.

A note on tools and policies: Turnitin updates Clarity regularly, and features and labels change. In Turnitin’s system, Clarity assignments have also been labeled “Student Writing” assignments. Schools and instructors set their own rules for how Clarity is used. This article describes Clarity as Turnitin has published it. The current documentation and the school’s current policies are the controlling sources.

What Is Turnitin Clarity?

Turnitin Clarity is a composition space within Turnitin where students write and submit assignments, with an optional AI assistant that instructors can enable.

According to Turnitin, students draft directly in Clarity’s writing space, and their writing process from ideas to final submission is visible to the instructor. Turnitin’s student guide states that the AI assistant is available only when an instructor enables it.

What Does Clarity Record?

According to Turnitin’s FAQ for students, Clarity captures how a student changes and engages with the document in order to build a version history and an overview of the writing process.

Turnitin lists the data captured as including insertions, deletions, and revisions of text; clipboard paste events; copy and cut events; time spent actively editing, engaged with, or inactive in the document; tab switching; browser window focus, opening, and closing; and periodic snapshots of the work in progress. Turnitin’s guidance also says Clarity logs external paste events and notes whether each pasted passage was later changed. When the AI assistant is enabled, instructors can see a summary of the student’s AI chat history.

What Does Clarity Not Record?

Turnitin states that Clarity is not a proctoring environment, and that activity outside the writing space itself is not captured.

Turnitin’s instructor guidance also notes that if a student completes work outside the writing space, the tool doesn’t track that part of the writing process. In other words, a Writing Report reflects what happened inside Clarity, not a student’s research, notes, outlines, or drafts elsewhere.

What Does the Instructor See?

Instructors see a Writing Report when the student submits. According to Turnitin, it shows information such as writing time, copied and pasted text, and a playback of how the document developed.

Some universities using Clarity also describe an instructor dashboard that summarizes submissions and highlights selected writing flags.

Is Clarity an AI Detector?

No. Clarity records the writing process, while Turnitin’s AI writing detection is a separate feature that schools license separately.

That distinction matters, because a Clarity Writing Report and an AI detection score are different kinds of information: one records activity in the writing space, and the other estimates whether text resembles AI-generated writing.

What Happens If a Professor Questions a Writing Report?

A professor who has concerns about a Writing Report may raise them with the student, refer the matter to the school’s academic integrity process, or both.

If a case is opened, the school’s procedures decide the outcome based on all the available information. For more on AI-related cases, see why AI detection results alone can still trigger cheating cases and why AI use allegations are increasing.

Common Misconceptions About Turnitin Clarity

“Clarity is just another AI detector.” Clarity records the writing process; AI detection is a separate Turnitin feature.

“Clarity sees everything I do on my computer.” Turnitin states that activity outside the writing environment isn’t captured.

“A paste event means I copied someone’s work.” A paste event records that text was pasted, not where it came from or whether it was permitted.

“I can’t use AI in Clarity at all.” Clarity’s AI assistant is available when the instructor enables it, under the instructor’s rules.
