Need to appeal a suspension or expulsion from UF? Here’s how from an attorney for students.

On Behalf of | Jun 14, 2018

If you are reading this, chances are that you were found responsible for a violation of UF student policy. Even though you were found responsible, it’s not the end of the process. UF has clearly outlined appeal procedures regarding disciplinary decisions. How can a UF student appeal a suspension or expulsion from school? Read on for tips from a University of Florida student defense lawyer.

What is an appeal?

The University of Florida defines an appeal as a final review of disciplinary sanctions.

Who does the appeal get sent to?

That depends on the nature of the violation. Some violations deal with housing, student life, academic integrity, or code of conduct. The appeal should be sent to the appropriate person within the department that the violation occurred.

What do I write about in my appeal?

The specifics depend on the type of violation you were found responsible for. The UF code does limit the issues a student can write about. This is typical of all universities and UF is no exception. The appeal issues are limited to the following four categories:

  • Students rights were violated during the hearing process
  • New Material
  • Information presented does not support the disciplinary decision
  • Sanctions were not appropriate for the violation

How long do I have to submit my appeal to the University of Florida?

The UF policy is clear – 10 business days from the date of the decision letter. This means that you must act fast.

Can you help all UF students that need a college appeal?

Yes. I write appeals for students facing all types of issues including suspension and expulsion. Appeal writing is a specialized skill that not all lawyers possess. Using my decades of experience, I meticulously comb through your entire student record and spot for facts that support the four appeal categories UF sets forth. Hiring a knowledgeable appeal lawyer will give you the best chance at a successful outcome.

What happens if I lose my appeal?

The decision in UF’s eyes is final. Students have no other options to fight the discipline within the university. There is another option outside of the university process called a writ of certiorari. I always caution students though, writs of certiorari can take a long time and the issues are even more limited than the appeal within the college. Your best shot is always winning your appeal within UF. This is why I always recommend getting a student defense attorney involved as early as possible in the disciplinary process.

Make your last chance at fighting a suspension or expulsion from UF your best.
